1st Time SOM offers a comprehensive course to get you qualified & an option to stay with us as a full-time franchised instructor. Here is an overview:

In order to become a DVSA Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) there are three tests of ability to pass.

  1. The first test is a Theory test. You will be asked 100 multiple choice questions. The questions fit into four categories. To pass this part of the test you must achieve a score of 87% and achieve 20 out of 25 from each category.

The second part of the test is a Hazard Perception Test. You will be shown 14 clips lasting one minute each. Each clip offers a maximum of five points.

The minimum score is 57 out of 75. You must pass both parts of this test to progress.
  2. The second test is a test of your driving ability.  The drive will last for an hour and you will be required to demonstrate expert control of the car and use of the Mirror Signal Manoeuvre routine.  During the test you will be asked to perform the following manoeuvres:  Turn in the road, Reverse round a corner to the Left and Right, Parallel Parking and Bay Park and the Emergency Stop.  You are allowed a maximum of six driver (minor) faults.
  3. The third test is a test of your ability to teach.  The test will last for 45 minutes.  You will have to teach your own pupil as if the examiner is not there & they will assess your teaching ability.

    Your pupil can be a:
    • partly trained learner
    • fully trained learner
    • full licence holder

In order to pass this test, you will need to demonstrate knowledge of the topic, be able to identify faults when made and be able to explain how to fix the fault.
